In 2007, Mike, then 15, was crowned World Champion in the Topper sailing class. He has since progressed via the 29er class to the 420. Mike explains why:
"I have decided to move into the other recognised RYA youth double hander - the 420. I had quite a few reasons for the move but the main ones being that the 420 is more suited to my sailing strengths etc. and that it is the racing class for Youth Worlds in 2009 and 2010. It is also the perfect 'feeder' boat into the 470 which is likely to be my chosen Olympic class"
Partnering Mike is Hugh Brayshaw, 15. The pair have been selected for the RYA National Youth Squad in the 420 class and intend to qualify, compete and medal at the ISAF Youth World Championships at Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, the Open World Championships at Riva del Garda, Italy and European Championships at Lake Ballaton,Hungary |
